Summary
BJP has repeated its stellar performance in UP. But let us try to know how the performance of the BJP was in the seats of western Uttar Pradesh, which have been influenced by the farmers’ movement.
The trends of the UP assembly elections so far are showing that the BJP is forming the government again here. The BJP under the leadership of Yogi Adityanath has performed brilliantly in eastern Uttar Pradesh, Awadh areas. The performance of BJP in the midst of the farmers’ agitation is showing that the people have approved the policies of CM Yogi. But let us try to know how the performance of the BJP was in the seats of western Uttar Pradesh, which have been influenced by the farmers’ movement.
After the return of agricultural laws, the campaign was intensified by the BJP.
The central government had announced the withdrawal of all three agricultural laws in view of the assembly elections. After the end of the farmers’ movement, the BJP intensified its campaign in western Uttar Pradesh. CM Yogi Adityanath had reached for Jan Vishwas rally in some districts of West UP. Apart from this, a veteran leader like Amit Shah himself had taken over the command of this area. The farmer factor was visible even after the withdrawal of agitation in 73 seats of western UP. However, the BJP was never out of the contest.
The Bharatiya Kisan Union has a strong presence in many of the 73 seats in the total 15 districts of western UP such as Shamli, Muzaffarnagar, Baghpat, Meerut, Ghaziabad, Saharanpur, Hapur, Hathras, Bijnor and Agra. Last time BJP had won 312 seats in the entire state by winning 61 seats from here. This time the competition was tough for him.
Update of six districts of Western UP
- Of the six seats in Muzaffarnagar district, BJP is ahead in four, RLD on two.
- In Bijnor, BJP leads in four out of eight seats, SP on four.
- Out of seven seats in Meerut, BJP on four seats, alliance on three.
- In Shamli, BJP is ahead on one seat out of three, RLD ahead on two.
- BJP in one seat out of three in Baghpat, RLD’s lead on two.
- In Saharanpur, out of seven seats, BJP is ahead in three and SP on four.
- BJP lead in all nine seats of Agra.
The factor of peasant movement did not show much effect. The factor of the farmers’ movement showed its effect against the BJP in the same districts where there is a sufficient number of Muslims apart from Jats. Particularly in districts like Meerut, Ghaziabad, Agra and Hapur, the BJP did not expect much damage. The reason for this is that there is not much population of Jat and Muslim community in these districts. The loss was more where Jats and Muslims together make up more than 30 per cent.
Even after the farmers’ agitation, the BJP’s position in western UP was not as weak as was being claimed. Especially through projects like Delhi-Meerut Expressway, Jewar Airport, BJP has strengthened its hold. The situation of Muslim versus Hindu is seen in many districts, but here the equation does not seem to be deteriorating. These include the urban seats of Meerut and Ghaziabad.
