New Delhi: Sam Pitroda, president of Congress think tank and Indian Overseas Congress, has advocated imposing tax on inherited property. He said that there are such laws in America. Sam said that in America any person can transfer 45 percent to his children. The government takes 55 percent share. Pitroda said that you have created wealth for your generation. You should leave your property to the public, not the whole, but half, which seems fair to me. He said that there is no such law in India but such a rule should be made here also.
Sam gave an example and explained the reason
Sam said that there is inheritance tax in America. If someone has a net worth of $100 million and when he dies he can transfer only 45% to his children. 55% is grabbed by the government. This is an interesting law. When we talk about redistribution of wealth we are talking about new policies and new programs. Which is in the interest of the people and not in the interest of the super-rich.
Clarification given on Congress manifesto
Sam Pitroda, while clarifying on the Congress manifesto, said that nothing will be taken from anyone’s house. Pitroda said that this is a policy issue. Congress party will make a policy through which wealth distribution will be better. Pitroda said that we do not have minimum wage in India. If we come with minimum wage in the country and say that you have to give this much money for the poor, then it is not wrong.
Said this about the rich
Rich people do not pay adequate salaries to their peons, servants and domestic servants, rather they spend that money on holidays in Dubai and London. When you talk about distribution of wealth, it is not that you sit on a chair and say I have so much money and I will distribute it to everyone. It is foolish to think like this.
Jairam Ramesh gave clarification
Congress General Secretary Jairam Ramesh has given clarification on Sam Pitroda’s statement. He said that Sam has been a mentor, friend, philosopher and guide to many people around the world. In a democracy a person is free to discuss, express and debate his personal views. This does not mean that Pitroda’s views always reflect the Congress position.
