New Delhi: Which is the happiest country in the world? Not America, China or Russia, but Finland is the happiest country in the world. The ranking list of the world’s happiest countries for 2024 has arrived. The United Nations’ annual World Happiness Report was published on Wednesday. In this annual World Happiness Report, Finland remained the happiest country in the world for the seventh consecutive year. Like last year, India is at 126th position in the happiness ranking.
After Finland, Denmark, Iceland and Sweden come in the world happiness ranking. Nordic countries have retained their place among the 10 happiest countries. Afghanistan ruled by Taliban is at the bottom in this ranking. For more than a decade after the World Happiness Report was published, the United States and Germany were in the top 20 happiest countries. But this is the first time that America has come to 23rd place and Germany to 24th place in the new ranking. Costa Rica and Kuwait have entered the top 20 at 12th and 13th position.
Countries with large population are not happy
The report says that now none of the world’s largest countries is included among the happiest countries. Among the top 10 countries, only Netherlands and Australia have population of more than 15 million. Among the top 20 countries, only Canada and the UK have a population of more than 30 million. The sharpest declines in the happiness index since 2006-10 were seen in Afghanistan, Lebanon and Jordan, while the largest increases were recorded in Eastern European countries Serbia, Bulgaria and Latvia.
On what basis is this happiness ranking?
Happiness rankings are based on individuals’ self-assessment of life satisfaction as well as GDP per capita, social support, healthy life expectancy, freedom, generosity, and corruption. Jennifer Di Paola, a happiness researcher at the University of Helsinki in Finland, told news agency AFP that people living in Finland find a close connection to nature and a healthy work-life balance important in their life satisfaction.
