Washington. The US on Friday imposed new sanctions on five North Korean units involved in North Korea’s recent missile tests, including the first intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) launch in four years. The news agency Yonhap reported, citing the Treasury Department, that the 5 entities include the Ministry of Rocket Industry of the North (MORI).
“Today’s action targets a DPRK WMD research and development organization directly involved in the development of the new ICBM, as well as its four revenue-generating subsidiaries,” the department said in a press release.
DPRK stands for Official Name of the North, Democratic People’s Republic of Korea.
North Korea launched an apparent ICBM last Thursday, ending its self-imposed moratorium on long-range missile testing since November 2017.
The Treasury Department noted two North Korean missile tests on February 27 and March 5, which were related to the test of a new ICBM system.
According to the Treasury Department, Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said, “The DPRK’s ballistic missile tests represent a clear threat to regional and global security and are a gross violation of UN Security Council resolutions.”
Four subsidiaries of the North Korean Ministry of Rocket Industry are among the five entities added to the Office of Foreign Assets Control’s list. They are Hapjunggang Trading Corporation, Korea Ryunsan Trading Corporation, Sungnison Trading Corporation and Ancheon Trading Corporation.
According to the press release, “These trading companies have undertaken various activities aimed at generating revenue for MoRI. Such activities include setting up joint ventures in North Korea, pursuing large-scale projects with Chinese firms, and North Korea.” Including exporting Korean labor.”
