United Nations: America has spoiled the game by using its ‘veto’ power in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) against the proposal to grant full membership of the United Nations to Palestine. Due to this Palestine was deprived of becoming a permanent member of the United Nations. Israel appreciated America’s veto power against this proposal. Palestine has criticized it, terming it unfair and immoral. Let us tell you that voting took place on Thursday on a draft resolution in the Security Council. Upon its passage, the 193-member United Nations General Assembly would recommend that Palestine be accepted as a member of this global organization.
There are a total of 15 member countries of the Security Council. 12 votes were cast in support of the proposal, while Switzerland and Britain abstained from voting and America ‘vetoed’. To pass the draft resolution, at least nine members of the Security Council needed to vote in its support and none of the five permanent member states of the UNSC had to use their ‘veto’ power. The five permanent member countries of the Security Council are China, France, Russia, Britain and America. Palestine’s efforts to obtain full member state status began in 2011 itself. Palestine is currently a non-member observer country. The United Nations General Assembly granted it this status in 2012. This status allows Palestine to participate in the proceedings of the world body, but cannot vote on resolutions brought to the United Nations.
Israel praised America
Another non-member observer state at the UN is the Holy See, representing the Vatican. Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz, while praising America’s use of ‘veto’ power, termed the proposal as shameful. Katz posted on the social media platform The proposal would encourage terrorism.” At the same time, US Ambassador and Alternate Special Representative for Special Political Affairs Robert Wood said that Washington will continue to strongly support the two-nation principle. “This vote does not reflect opposition to granting Palestine statehood, but instead reaffirms that this must happen through direct negotiations between the two parties,” he said. Wood said there are unresolved questions about whether Palestine meets the qualifications for statehood.
Palestine President angry at America
Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas strongly criticized America’s use of ‘veto’ power, saying it is unfair and immoral and disobeys the will of the international community. “Our right to self-determination has never been a subject of bargaining or negotiation,” said Riyad Mansour, Permanent Observer for Palestine. “Our right to self-determination is a natural, historical, legal right. We have the right to live as an independent country, free and sovereign, in our territory, Palestine. Our right to self-determination cannot be taken away from us. ,
Palestine had asked for full membership of the United Nations
Palestine had sent a letter to UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on April 2, 2024, urging him to reconsider its application for full membership. Guterres warned in remarks to the Security Council meeting on West Asia earlier in the day that the situation in the region was critical. The United Nations quoted Gaza’s Health Ministry as saying that from October 7, 2023 to April 17, 2024, 33,899 Palestinians have been killed and 76,664 have been injured in Gaza. At the same time, on October 7 last year, more than 1,200 Israelis and citizens of other countries were killed in the Hamas attack in Israel. 33 children are also included in the dead. (Language)
