Varanasi. Today can be an important day in the case of Gyanvapi Masjid of Varanasi. A local court here is likely to pronounce its verdict today on whether to conduct a re-survey by demolishing the wall in front of the Nandi statue outside the mosque and opening the passageways below where the alleged Shivling was found. The Hindu side had filed an application in this regard in the court on Tuesday. Civil Judge Ravi Kumar Diwakar is free to take a decision in this regard as the Supreme Court has not stayed the proceedings in the lower court.
In fact, on May 14, 15 and 16, the survey of the Gyanvapi campus was done on the orders of the court. During this survey, a shape like Shivling was found in the tank of Vajukhana. The Hindu side claims that there is an idol of Nandi outside the mosque just in front of it and that is why it is a Shivling. He had demanded that the road which has been closed down to the tank of Vazukhana should be opened and a new survey should be done by demolishing the wall of the mosque in front of Nandi. The court will now give its verdict after knowing the views of both the parties on this important issue.
The Muslim side, however, has been consistently saying that the Shivling-like figure found in the Vazukhana is a fountain. He says that earlier this fountain used to run, but it has been closed for the last 50 years. At the same time, the Hindu side is saying that the fountain is not like this and what is the technique to run it, the Muslim side should tell. The Hindu side claims that the Shivling, which is a hundred feet, has been described in the Puranas. In such a situation, a large part of it may be under the armpit. Let us tell you that after the hearing yesterday, the Supreme Court had given the responsibility of protecting the figure of Shivling to the Varanasi administration. However, the order of the local court fixing the number of Muslims who could go to the mosque to offer prayers was stayed.
