New Delhi. The Modi government has made its first major appointment after coming to power at the centre for the third time. The government has decided to appoint Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi as the next Army Chief. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi is currently the Deputy Chief of the Army. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi will take over the command of the Army when the current Army Chief General Manoj Pandey retires on 30 June.
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was born on 1 July 1964. In December 1984, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was commissioned in the Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. Upendra Dwivedi, who has been working in the army for about 40 years, has also served abroad. Apart from this, he has also handled important commands of the army. Before becoming the Deputy Chief of the Army, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was the GOC of the Northern Command till some time before 2022. During the ongoing tension with China on the LAC, Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi made a significant contribution in keeping the Indian Army strong in Ladakh. Apart from this, he also took important steps to strengthen India’s security on the LoC with Pakistan.
Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi had earlier also commanded the 18 Jammu and Kashmir Rifles. He has been the officer commanding the 26 Sector Assam Rifles. Apart from this, he was the DIG in Assam Rifles. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has also commanded the 9th Corps. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi was also the Director General of Infantry. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi, who studied at the Sainik School in Rewa, Madhya Pradesh, became a part of the National Defense College to join the army. Apart from this, he has also done courses from the Army War College of America, DSSC Wellington and the Indian Army’s War College located in Mhow. Upendra Dwivedi has also received the status of Special Fellow in USAWC of America. Lieutenant General Upendra Dwivedi has also obtained a Masters degree in Strategy and Military Science in addition to M.Phil in Defense and Management.
