CJI DY Chandrachud will retire at the end of this year. His tenure ends on 10 November 2024. After this, for the next 8 years, except one CJI, there will be no one whose tenure lasts more than 1 year. Justice JB Pardiwala will be the only one who will remain on the CJE chair for more than 2 years.
Who is Justice JB Pardiwala?
Justice JB Pardiwala was born on 12 August 1965 in Mumbai. His early education took place at St. Joseph’s Convent School. After this, he completed his graduation from Jaypee Arts College in 1985. Then he went to KM Law College, Valsad to study law. Took LLB degree from here in the year 1988. After this, he started practicing law in Valsad in the year 1989. Came to Gujarat High Court in September 1990 and started practicing here.
The year 2002 was the turning point for Pardiwala’s career. In the same year the government appointed him as its Standing Council. During this time, Justice Pardiwala was also appointed as a nominated member of the Disciplinary Committee of the Bar Council of India. He was also the editor of the prestigious magazine ‘Gujarat Law Herald’ published by the Bar Council of Gujarat.
When did you become a judge for the first time?
Justice JB Pardiwala was appointed Additional Judge of Gujarat High Court on 17 February 2011. Then on January 28, 2013, he was made a permanent judge. During this period he was also the President of Gujarat State Judicial Academy. Heard cases mainly related to criminal, civil, services and indirect tax.

After serving in the High Court for nearly 10 years, Pardiwala was transferred as a judge to the Supreme Court on 9 May 2022. According to a report by sconline, Justice Pardiwala has so far heard more than 400 criminal cases, more than 250 service matters, more than 200 civil and direct tax and more than 150 GST related cases.
In line to become CJI
Justice JB Pardiwala is in line to become the Chief Justice of India. If the existing principle of seniority is followed, Justice Pardiwala will become the Chief Justice of India on May 3, 2028. His tenure will be of 2 years and 3 months. Will remain on this post till 11 August 2030.
Who is the next CJI after Chandrachud? Some will remain on the chair for 6 months and some for only 36 days.
In a way, Justice Pardiwala will leave behind DY Chandrachud’s two-year tenure as CJI. Another thing worth noting is that Justice Pardiwala is the fourth judge in the history of the Supreme Court who comes from the Parsi community.

After coming to the Supreme Court, Justice Pardiwala gave many famous decisions. For example, the case of EWS quota. Pardiwala was part of the Constitution bench which had upheld the validity of the EWS quota by a majority vote. Apart from Justice Pardiwala, Justice Dinesh Maheshwari and Justice Bela Trivedi were in favor of the decision. Whereas Justice UU Lalit and Justice Ravindra Bhatt were against it.
Apart from this, he upheld the decision of Allahabad High Court in the Gyanvapi Masjid survey case. Anjuman Arrangements Mosque Committee had approached the Supreme Court against the Allahabad High Court’s decision to survey the mosque. Justice Pardiwala was also part of the bench which granted relief to BJP leader and advocate Nupur Sharma from arrest.
Father Assembly Speaker, family of lawyers
Very few people know that Justice JB Pardiwala’s family has been in the legal profession for many generations. Great grandfather Navrozji Bhikaji Pardiwala used to practice law in Valsad in 1894. Dada Kawasji Naoroji Pardiwala also practiced in the year 1929 and was a very famous lawyer.
Justice JB Pardiwala’s father Burjor Cawasji Pardiwala also joined the bar and started practice in 1955. He was also the Speaker of the Gujarat Legislative Assembly from December 1989 to March 1990.
