A day after 16 YouTube news channels were blocked by the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting for spreading misinformation related to national security, Union Minister Anurag Thakur on Tuesday said the Center would continue such strict action in future if required. He said, “No one has the right to spread rumors and fake news, which become a challenge to the security and integrity of the country. Strict action has been taken as per the rules and once again the Government of India has blocked 16 YouTube channels for their Action has been taken against him. This is the fifth such action.”
The minister said that this is a clear message to the people of the country and outside that strict action will continue in future also. “India’s security will not be compromised and efforts will continue to prevent misinformation against the country in future,” he said.
In a statement on Monday, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting had said that in exercise of emergency powers under the IT Rules, 2021, instructions have been issued to block 16 YouTube-based news channels and one Facebook account under two separate orders. .
“The blocked social media accounts include six Pakistan-based and ten India-based YouTube news channels with a total viewership of more than 68 million. It has been observed that these channels are being used for national security, Indian security purposes,” the ministry said. This was done to spread fake news on social media on matters related to foreign relations, communal harmony and public order in the country.”
The ministry further said, “Pakistan-based YouTube channels were found to be using a well-planned method to post fake news about India on various topics such as India’s foreign relations with reference to the Indian Army, the situation in Jammu and Kashmir and Ukraine.” The contents of these channels have been considered completely incorrect and sensitive from the point of view of national security, sovereignty and integrity of India and India’s friendly relations with foreign states.”
