After the Supreme Court warned the Indian Army of contempt, the central government on Friday assured that it will provide the Permanent Commission (PC) option to all 11 women military officers. The Center also informed the Supreme Court that an expeditious decision would be taken within 10 days in respect of 11 women military officers who approached the Supreme Court for Permanent Commission (PC). The matter was being heard by a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud.
The Supreme Court in its order said, “11 women officers will be given permanent commission within a period of 10 days. The ASG says that officers, who are not before the Supreme Court in contempt proceedings, but meet the criteria, should also be granted permanent commission within a period of three weeks. Along with this, the Supreme Court has directed the Army to complete the process of granting permanent commission to women officers by November 26.
In this case, Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain and senior advocate Col R. Balasubramaniam was present. He told the Supreme Court that the Army is also keen to give a final touch to the matter. A bench of Justice DY Chandrachud observed that ‘out of the 72 officers who had applied for premature release, 39 had applied for PC and in compliance with its decision a letter was issued on October 29, 2021. Is.’
Additional Solicitor General Sanjay Jain told the Supreme Court that out of total 72 women officers, one has sought release. Out of 35, 21 petitioners got local commission while 14 women officers failed in medical. 11 officers will also be given permanent commission within ten days. At the same time, women officers who have not turned to CART but are eligible, will be given permanent commission within 20 days.
Let us tell you that a bench of Justice DY Chandrachud was hearing a contempt petition on the order of 72 women officers of the Indian Army. These women officers had claimed in the court that they have been denied Permanent Commission (PC) in violation of the court’s March order. Permanent commission (PC) means career in the army till retirement, while short service commission is for 10 years.
In March this year, another bench headed by Justice Chandrachud had declared all women officers who meet the 60% cut-off, specified medical criteria and vigilance and disciplinary sanction, for permanent commission.
