New Delhi. The first match of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2024) was full of thrill. The result came on the last ball of the match played between Mumbai Indians vs Delhi Capitals on Friday at M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. Mumbai needed 5 runs on the last ball to win. As soon as S Sanjana stepped on the crease, she freed herself from pressure and gave Mumbai a memorable victory by hitting a six on her very first ball. In this way, Mumbai, under the captaincy of Harmanpreet Kaur, snatched victory from the jaws of Delhi.
In response to the target of 172 runs by Delhi Capitals, Mumbai Indians scored 173 runs for 6 wickets and won by 4 wickets. For Mumbai, captain Harmanpreet Kaur played an inning of 55 runs while Yastika Bhatia contributed 57 runs. For Delhi, Arundhati Reddy and Elise Capse took two wickets each.

Delhi Capitals scored 171 runs for 5 wickets
Earlier, with the half-century of English player Elise Capse (75 runs), Delhi Capitals scored a challenging score of 171 runs for 5 wickets. Facing 53 balls, Ellis hit eight fours and three sixes in his innings. Elise came to the crease after opener Shafali Verma (01) became the victim of experienced fast bowler Shabnam Ismail early on. She gave a good start to the team by making a partnership of 64 runs with captain Meg Lanning (31 runs).
Brunt sent Lanning to the pavilion
Delhi’s score in powerplay was 26 runs for one wicket. Ellis hit two consecutive fours on England’s experienced fast bowler Nate Sciver Brunt. After this, Lanning hit the first six of the match over long on on leg spinner S Keertana. But Brunt soon ended the innings of Lanning (25 balls, three fours, one six). Ellis then along with vice-captain Jemimah Rodrigues (42 runs) made a thrilling partnership of 73 runs in 7.3 overs for the third wicket.
Jemimah Rodrigues missed her half-century
Ellis targeted the balls of leg spinner and partner Amelia Kerr. But she was out LBW on the ball of the same bowler and returned to the pavilion. However, by then the Delhi Capitals team had reached a strong position. Jemima (42) was also looking in good form but was caught by the wicketkeeper on Brunt’s ball. Brunt and Kerr both got two wickets each.
