The organization did not release separate India data on these disorders, but said that since 2014 some data is being collected on hospital deliveries in India, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Myanmar and Nepal. According to them, 40 lakh children were born in 2021, out of which 45 thousand were found to have these congenital disorders.
Dr. Poonam Khetrapal Singh, Regional Director of South-East Asia of the organization said that in 2019, this problem had untimely ended the lives of 5.30 lakh children in the world, of which 1.17 lakh were from South-East Asia. It is the third leading cause of death of children in our country. These disorders account for 12% of neonatal deaths in the world. Not only death, the surviving children may have to suffer health problems and disability throughout their life. According to the University of Pune, more than 82,000 children died in India in 2017.
37 thousand newborn died a few days after birth
According to Dhamsagar Ujgare and Anita Kar from the School of Health Sciences, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune, 82,436 thousand children under the age of 5 died due to birth defects in 2017. 37 thousand died within a few days of birth. In the same year, 5,01,764 neonatal deaths were recorded in the world due to birth defects. This report also analyzes these deaths from 1990 to 2017 and shows that the decline in them is very minor.
What are these disorders? These include neural tube defects causing weakness in the brain, spine and spinal cord, thalassemia, disorders in the structure of the heart, Down syndrome, and defects in the face and lips.
