World Wildlife Day 2022 Special: Sanjay Kumar Sharma, Umaria. In Madhya Pradesh’s famous Bandhavgarh Tiger Reserve, the never-ending bison (wild buffalo) is once again making it buzzing. This success was achieved through an effort named “Introduction of Gaur in Bandhavgarh”. This project which started 12 years ago is at the peak of its success. Initially 49 bison were brought here from Kanha Tiger Reserve, now their number has increased from 140. The bison had become extinct in Bandhavgarh after the adverse effect on the wildlife ecosystem due to pollution and changing weather.
Bison hunted by tigers and humans
According to the information, the bison had spread over a large area of Bandhavgarh and reached those places where the conditions of the forest were not favorable for them. In such a situation, they were hunted by tigers and humans and at one point it came that Bandhavgarh became devoid of bison.
set up like this
From the year 2005 to 2010, research was done on the resettlement of bison here. Based on the results, the strategy was that if bison were allowed to live separately throughout the forest, they would not survive. For this, the Kallavah range was chosen and favorable conditions were created. Bison were also brought from Kanha Tiger Reserve. Gradually their number started increasing.
Dr. Rakesh Shukla, former research officer of Kanha, says that bison are an important part of the wildlife ecosystem. Out of this, if any animal or plant is less then the system is affected.

Introduction of Gaur in Bandhavgarh has been one such project whose success is the biggest proof of adapting to the deteriorating conditions. Other states are now moving forward on such projects.
