According to history, Mother Sati married Lord Shiva against her father Daksha. After which once King Daksha was performing a yajna, but he did not call Sati and Shiva for it. Due to which Sati becomes depressed, and still goes to her father’s house. When she reaches there, her father starts insulting Shiva, which Sati cannot tolerate and then she jumps into the fire of Yagya. When Shiva comes to know about this, he gets angry. Then Shiva takes the body of Sati in his hands and starts doing tandav. Seeing this, Lord Vishnu uses his Sudarshan Chakra to save all the things and with its help cuts Sati’s body into pieces. In such a situation, the pieces of Sati’s body fall at different places, which are known today as Shakti Peeth. Sati’s vagina had fallen in the Kamakhya Devi temple.
There are different types of worship
Durga Puja is performed here during Navratri in September-October. At the same time, Ambuvasi Puja is also celebrated with great joy, as a matter of fact, this temple remains closed for three days every month, it is believed that the period of the goddess comes in these three days. On the fourth day this temple is opened and on the same day this worship is done. Pohan Biya is also celebrated with great pomp. In the month of Pausa, symbolic marriage is done to Dev Kameshvar and Goddess Kameshwari. In the month of Mandandiol Chaitra, special worship of Kamadeva and Kamesalara is done here.
