This year ‘Lathmar Holi’ will be played today i.e. on March 11. It is said that, in Dwapara Yuga, Shri Krishna started playing Lathmar Holi with Radharani and the Gopis. Since then this tradition is going on till date.
Lord Krishna has performed many pastimes in Dwapar Yuga. The pastimes of Shri Krishna with Radha and the Gopis in childhood are famous. It is said that when Bal Shri Krishna used to play Holi with Radhaji and the Gopis in Barsana, he used to harass them. Radhaji and the gopis used to run with a stick to Lord Krishna and the cowherds. Radhaji and the gopis, drenched in the love of Shri Krishna, used to welcome him with colored gulal and sticks. Since then this tradition has been going on.
On the day of Lathmar Holi, enthusiasm is seen throughout Braj. The men of Nandgaon and the women of Barsane participate in Holi here, because Krishna belonged to Nandgaon and Radha belonged to Barsane. During this, the people of Nandgaon reach to play Holi with the women of Barsana with a whip on their waist. Meanwhile, the women of Barsana use sticks on them and the men try to escape from their sticks using shields. People come to Mathura from far and wide to see this festival.
