Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched a scathing attack on the Congress at a government event held in Delhi on Sunday. He alleged that the Congress enacted a repressive law against the scavengers, denying Baba Saheb Bhimrao Ambedkar’s respect for the Constitution. Citing the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, 1957, Modi said that it had a provision of one month sentence for the scavengers without prior notice. He said, “They dance with the Constitution, but actually crush it.”
The Prime Minister also said that the Congress used the Constitution to gain power and crushed his soul during the Emergency. He alleged that the Congress destroyed the spirit of the Constitution and promoted vote bank politics.
This statement comes at a time when the Congress and other opposition parties are protesting against the special intensive amendment process (SIR) of the Election Commission. The Congress has alleged that under this process, the names of Dalits, tribals, minorities and poor class voters have been removed from the list.
Prime Minister Modi in his statement also said that his government has taken steps to protect the rights of the scavengers and abolished such oppressive laws. He questioned the Congress that when he talks about the constitution, why did he make such strict provisions against the scavengers.
This entire incident has further increased the political temperature over the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. The deadline issued by the Election Commission and the Supreme Court order has made the issue more complicated. It will now be seen how political parties and commissions carry this process forward with transparency and impartiality.
