19-year-old boxer Karan Pipaliya was declared brain dead yesterday. He was playing in the Gujarat State Boxing Championship being held in Mehsana, Gujarat. Pipaliya was playing in the 63.5 kg weight category. He was pitted against Harshvardhan Rathore of Surat. The match was being played at Sardar Patel Sports Complex Panchkot in Panchkot, Mehsana. Karan’s father said that if there were enough ambulances, my son could have been saved.
Boxing selector Dushyant Patel said that Rathod had taken the lead over Pipaliya after two rounds. But the referee stopped the third and final bout because Pipaliya did not seem fit for it. Patel said that after this he fell down and was immediately taken for medical help. Patel said that if Karan felt that he was not in a position to play, then he should have withdrawn from the bout. It is being told that Pipaliya had bleeding in his brain. Due to this, he underwent surgery in a private hospital in Mehsana. After this, seeing his deteriorating condition, he was taken to SIMS Hospital in Surat.
Doctors treating him at SIMS said that when he was brought to Surat hospital, he was already brain dead. Currently, Karan is on life support. Karan is admitted in the hospital in a brain dead condition. His family is still hopeful of his recovery. Karan’s father Bharat Pipaliya spoke about the lack of adequate medical facilities in the program.
The boxer’s father said that there were more than 150 participants in the event, but there were not enough ambulances. I came to know that my son was taken to the hospital in a private car because there was only one ambulance. If there were enough ambulances, my son would have received timely treatment and he could have been saved. I request the organizers of the event to arrange for enough ambulances so that such incidents can be prevented from happening.
