Congress leader Shaktisingh Gohil raised the issue

A lot changed in the world after the Russia-Ukraine war started. Prices of crude oil and wheat started touching the sky. During this period, the Indian state of Gujarat also came under its influence. In India’s Diamond City Surat, the livelihood of lakhs of people involved in diamond polishing work is in danger. Regarding this, the Gujarat unit of Congress said on Thursday that diamond workers in Surat are facing a ‘serious crisis’ of unemployment and recession due to the Russia-Ukraine war. The main opposition party urged the Center to take corrective measures in this direction.

“Some diamond workers even committed suicide”

Congress state unit president Shaktisinh Gohil said that due to the crisis in the diamond industry, many diamond workers lost their jobs and some of them even committed suicide. He said Surat’s diamond industry is facing a serious crisis as the G-7 group countries have imposed a ban on Russian diamonds. Russian diamonds are imported for cutting and polishing in India and exported to Western markets as well as China, the United Arab Emirates (UAE) and Hong Kong.

“Rough diamonds are mined in Russia”

Gohil said most of the rough diamonds are mined in Russia. Many workers associated with the diamond industry lost their jobs and some of them even committed suicide. Gohil said that despite the seriousness of the crisis, the central and state governments did nothing to help the diamond workers. He said that these workers are struggling to survive. Gohil asked why the central government did not raise the issue with the G-7 group countries including the US, UK and Europe regarding stringent restrictions on rough diamonds obtained from Russian mines.

Where are the diamond polishing factories in Gujarat?

The Congress leader claimed that Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat and India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar neither held a single meeting with stakeholders nor raised the problems of the diamond sector with the G7-group countries, the US and European countries. Diamond industry is one of the most employment generating industries in Gujarat, as about 25 lakh families are directly or indirectly dependent on this industry. Gohil said that diamond polishing factories are located in Surat, Navsari, Bhavnagar, Amreli, Botad, Rajkot, Junagadh and Ahmedabad. (input language)
