The experienced Indian women’s doubles team of Ashwini Ponnappa and Sikki Reddy lost 13-21, 31-21 to fourth seed Japanese pair of Nami Matsuyama and Chiharu Shida in the opening round of the German Open Super 300 badminton tournament on Wednesday.
Meanwhile, the Indian men’s doubles team of Krishna Prasad Garaga and Vishnuvardhan Panjala defeated Hiroki Okamura and Masayuki Onodera 24-22, 21-11 to enter the second round.
Another Indian men’s doubles team of Ishaan Bhatnagar and Sai Prateek also advanced to the second round by defeating English pair of Callum Hemming and Steven Stallwood 21-15, 21-16. In the second round, Krishna-Vishnuvardhan will face compatriots Ishaan and Sai.
MR Arjun and Dhruv Kapila, however, lost 13-21, 22-20, 19-21 to sixth seeded Malaysian pair Ong Yu Sin and Teo E Yi. Also in the first round of men’s singles, Shubhankar De Jao lost to Jun Peng 15-21, 8-21 and was knocked out of the Super 300 tournament.
