The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) said on Thursday that Jos Buttler has been appointed as the new captain of England’s limited overs teams. He will replace Eoin Morgan. England’s 2019 50-over World Cup-winning captain retired from international cricket on Tuesday. Butler has been a member of England’s T20 and ODI team for over a decade. He was the vice-captain since 2015. The right-handed wicket-keeper batsman had won the Orange Cap in IPL 2022 while performing brilliantly.
The 31-year-old has already led England 14 times in both One Day International and T20I formats. This also includes England’s last ODI against the Netherlands, when Morgan did not play due to a groin injury. Buttler will command 12 matches in the T20 and ODI series against India and South Africa in July.
According to a statement issued by the ECB, Buttler said on becoming captain, “It is the greatest honor to captain my country and I have loved it whenever I have had the opportunity to do so in the past. I can’t wait to take this team forward.” Working with coach Matthew Mott in white ball cricket, Butler will focus on the T20 World Cup in Australia later this year. Apart from this, the ODI World Cup is to be held in India in October-November next year. At the same time, in the year 2024, there will be a T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and America.
England’s director of men’s cricket, Rob Key, recommended Butler’s name for the position. His appointment was confirmed on Wednesday evening by ECB interim chairman Martin Darlow and chief executive Claire Connor. “Jos Buttler was the right choice to replace Eoin Morgan as our white-ball captain and I had no hesitation in offering him the role,” Key said.
Key added, “Jose has been a part of our white-ball set-up for over a decade and was integral to that transformation in the way the team played aggressive cricket over the past seven years. He is respected by all his teammates in the dressing room and he would love to lead his country.
“Butler is in a great phase of his career and is showing his talent against the best players and teams in the world. I am sure the added responsibility will take his game to a whole new level and inspire the people around him. I look forward to seeing them take us forward. He totally deserves this opportunity.”
