Serbian tennis legend Novak Djokovic claimed the title for the sixth time by defeating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0, 7-6 in the final of the Italy Open 2022 on Sunday. With this title win, Novak Djokovic has proved to be in great form for the French Open 2022.
Djokovic, who was out of the field for most of the season due to the Corona vaccination controversy during the Australian Open, dominated the tournament. He had earlier reached the final of the Italy Open tennis tournament by defeating Kasper Rudd in straight sets in the semi-finals.
The world number one registered his 1000th career win with a 6-4, 6-3 victory over Roode. He is only the fifth male player after Jimmy Connors (1,274 wins), Roger Federer (1,251), Ivan Lendl (1,068) and Rafael Nadal (1,051) to achieve the feat. Earlier, Inga Swiatec defended the title for their 28th consecutive win by defeating Ons Jebur 6-2, 6-2 in the women’s final.
She broke Serena Williams’ record of 27 consecutive wins. Serena achieved this feat in 2014 and 2015. Ons Jebur also reached the finals with 11 consecutive wins but failed to face the ranking top ranked player Swiatec.
