India’s top female badminton player PV Sindhu won the Swiss Open Super 300 tournament title on 27 March 2022. She won her second women’s singles title of the current season by defeating Busanan Ongbamrangfan of Thailand in the final of the tournament played in Basel, Switzerland. Sindhu, playing her second consecutive final in the tournament, defeated the fourth seed Thai shuttler 21-16, 21-8 in a match that lasted 49 minutes.
Two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu has won this second title within 3 months. Sindhu had won the Syed Modi International Super 300 in Lucknow in January this year. However, the Super 300 tournament is the second lowest tier of the BWF (World Badminton Federation) tour programme.
If we talk about big tournaments, Sindhu has not been able to win any title for 3 years. PV Sindhu won her last major title on 25 August 2019 in Basel, Switzerland. She then defeated Naomi Okuhara of Japan 21-7, 21-7 at the World Championships. Perhaps this is the reason why Hyderabad’s 26-year-old shuttler PV Sindhu has happy memories with Basel, Switzerland.
PV Sindhu had managed to reach the finals of two tournaments in 2021 but could not win the title. Sindhu had lost to Rio Olympic gold medalist Carolina Marin of Spain in the final of the 2021 Swiss Open. She also lost in the final of the World Tour Finals in 2021.
Talking about this match, this is Sindhu’s 16th win in 17 matches against Busanan. She lost to him only once at the 2019 Hong Kong Open. Sindhu made an aggressive start in this match and took a 3-0 lead. Busanan, however, made a comeback and leveled the score at 7-7. Busanan was trying to keep Sindhu away from the net, but was unable to finish her shot properly.
Sindhu had a two-point lead at the break. A brilliant shot near the backline earned Sindhu four game points and it was not too late to capitalize on it. In the second game, Busanan failed to compete with Sindhu. Sindhu made it 18-4 after taking a 5-0 lead and then went on to win the match easily.
