Australia’s white-ball captain Aaron Finch has no doubt in his mind that he will lead a team of aging players in this year’s ICC T20 World Cup. Finch hinted that the tournament could be the last for many cricketers, especially the batsmen. Finch has also included himself in this list. However, before saying goodbye to the T20 format, he wants to win the World Cup at home. Finch says lifting the trophy in front of the Melbourne Cricket Ground in November 2022 will be a dream come true for him. The T20 World Cup is to be played in Australia in October-November this year.
On Friday, 8 July 2022, the countdown to 100 days of the start of the T20 World Cup began. A function was organized by cricket.com.au on this occasion. Speaking at the event, Aaron Finch said, “It may be a complete stop for some players (many players are retiring from T20 Internationals, including him).”
Aaron Finch has hinted that this could be his last T20 World Cup. This could also be the last mega T20 event for opener David Warner and wicketkeeper-batsman Matthew Wade. They are both in their mid 30s.
Matthew Wade has already said that the 2022 T20 World Cup will be his last international tournament, while Warner also hinted that he may retire from T20 Internationals to prolong his Test and ODI career.
Finch will probably also focus on the 50-over World Cup in India in 2023. He will put an end to his international cricket journey at the end of the ODI World Cup. When asked about his white-ball future after the T20 World Cup, Finch said, “Good question… It’s obviously a 50-over World Cup to focus on… so I don’t think in the next 12 months ( After the World Cup) there will be a lot more T20 matches. So I don’t know.’
He said, ‘I think naturally when people get into their mid-30s, that’s what’s going to happen. Davy (Warner) keeps doing something, he can play for 10 more years, I love how fit he is and how much he loves competition and continues to challenge himself.’
Finch said, ‘Weddy (Matthew Wade) has gone through some phases. He has become very important to our team now. He is batting at number 7 and is dynamic. But they’re getting older too, aren’t they? Especially in that batting group.
Finch said that South Africa missed out on the net run-rate despite winning four out of their five matches in the United Arab Emirates last year, saying the World Cup in Australia will be incredibly tough.
“It’s going to be an incredibly tough competition,” he said. We saw that in the last World Cup, South Africa won 4 out of 5 matches, but could not qualify on the basis of net run rate. It’s so brutal you need a little luck along the way. So let’s see.’
