Kolkata. The war of words between Bollywood actor Naseeruddin Shah and singer-turned-politician Babul Supriyo has now come to the fore. Supriyo is a Trinamool Congress candidate for the assembly by-elections to be held in Ballygunge, Kolkata. Naseeruddin Shah on Monday issued a video message seeking support for his niece Saira Shah Haleem. Saira is the CPI(M) candidate in the Ballygunge bypoll. In the video message, without naming Babul Supriyo, Shah referred to his switching from the BJP to the Trinamool Congress last year.
Naseeruddin Shah said in the video message, “I am not a member of any political party. I am personally seeking votes for my niece. Would you choose someone who changes his political ideology frequently or any such To the person, who stands with the people? Hence, I am seeking support for Saira Shah Haleem in the Ballygunge bypoll.”
Responding to the video posted by Shah, Supriyo in a Twitter message late on Monday night raised doubts whether Shah had to release the video message due to pressure from the CPI(M).
Supriyo tweeted, “We all love and respect Naseeruddin Shah. A great legend who is now playing the role of an Uncle in real life. Wow! He has got both Padma Shri and Padma Bhushan but sadly no. He looks very sad in the video. Looks like CPI-M, West Bengal forced him to record it. But the video is too cute.”
Supriyo, a two-time BJP Lok Sabha member from Asansol constituency in West Burdwan district of West Bengal, also became a minister in the Narendra Modi-led central government. However, soon after the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, he joined the Trinamool Congress and resigned as the MP and Minister of Asansol.
This time Trinamool Congress has made him the party’s candidate for the Ballygunge assembly by-election. The BJP has fielded former journalist Kiya Ghosh. The by-election for the Ballygunge seat is necessitating the death of Trinamool Congress MLA and state Panchayat Minister Subrata Mukherjee on November 4, 2021.
