Patna. A prominent businessman of Patna city was killed and two others, including his son, were seriously injured for refusing to pay one thousand rupees as extortion in the Majarhatta wholesale market of Bihar’s capital on Wednesday. The incident took place in Mirchi Gali of Patna City Chowk police station area due to extortion of one thousand rupees.
According to eyewitnesses, four bike-borne criminals reached Pradeep Bangla’s wholesale-cum-retail shop and demanded one thousand rupees as extortion. Pradeep’s son Golu Bangla was sitting at the counter and an employee, Chhotu, was standing next to him.
Golu in a statement to the police said, “The attackers were asking for Rs 1000. We offered Rs 200, which they refused to accept. My father was doing puja at that time. They got into an argument with the miscreants. A miscreant pulled out a gun and opened fire on my father. We tried to save him, in which I and the employee, Chotu, got injured.”
“The attackers fired more than seven bullets, out of which three hit my father. He died on the spot,” he said.
After indiscriminate firing, traders of nearby shops downed the shutters to protect themselves. The attackers fled from the spot. The injured were admitted to Patna Medical College and Hospital for treatment.
There is huge outrage in the area due to this incident which took place in broad daylight. Even the police of Chowk police station could not muster the courage to reach the spot till two hours after the incident. Angry traders and local residents blocked the Gandhi Maidan-Patna City Ashok Rajpath.
Patna City Chowk police station SHO Pradeep Kumar said, “It is a case of extortion. Preliminary investigation has revealed that this businessman had paid the extortion earlier. The attackers appear to be local goons. We are trying to arrest them.”
Earlier in the day, leaders of opposition parties created ruckus inside and outside the assembly against the continuing incidents of crime in Bihar.
A leader of the ruling JDU was also murdered in Danapur on Sunday night.
