Leaving your television on standby has become very common these days – but do you know how much money you are spending by doing so? Let us tell you that your set top box continues to run even after the TV screen is turned off, which takes some electricity, but if it is calculated from year to year then you will be surprised.
Keeping the TV on standby all the time adds some money to your electricity bill. According to Energy Advice blog Ecocost Savings, a modern TV uses about 58.6 watts when turned on and 1.3 watts on standby. In terms of power consumption, the TV draws 10W to 117W of power when it is in use and 0.5W to 3W when on standby.
However, leaving the TV on standby every month doesn’t affect your budget much. But it definitely affects the long term bill. EcoCostSavings says that keeping the TV on standby costs the user about $16 (approximately Rs 1,222) every year.
If you want to save money spent on this extravagance, then you should not leave the TV on standby, but turn it off with the main plug. However, the biggest reason for leaving the TV on standby is the advent of wall hanging TVs. In the olden times, every TV set had a big power button but now everything is done via the remote control, which usually only gives you standby mode.
Utility also revealed that the average UK household leaves 10 items plugged in and switched off even when not in use. It is estimated that about 30 percent of households leave items on standby that they haven’t used for a year or more.
