The protest against the decision of the Karnataka High Court regarding the Hijab controversy has also started. Angered by the Karnataka High Court’s decision on hijab, Muslim community leaders have called for a Karnataka bandh on Thursday. On Wednesday, Muslim communities had closed their shops in Bhatkal, Karnataka. The shutters of most shops in the city remained down throughout the day. Bhatkal is a town located about 90 km from Udupi.
Hanif Shobab, a well-known doctor in the area said that the people of the Muslim community have voluntarily closed the shops for a day. The Karnataka High Court, while giving its verdict on the hijab case, on Tuesday said that it is not a part of the religious practice required in Islam. A three-judge bench of the High Court gave this decision. Along with this, the court also supported a speedy and effective investigation of the protests that took place during the hijab controversy.
Hijab is not necessarily part of religious practice
The court, while delivering the verdict, observed that the wearing of hijab on the part of Muslim women is not a part of the religious practice required under Islam and the prescribing of school uniform is only a reasonable restriction, to which the students cannot object. The bench of the court also said that the state government has the power to issue orders in this regard.
There will be a meeting with the Mauvis of the Muslim community
The entire state trade board has also been directed to participate in tomorrow’s bandh. Muslim leader Sagir Ahmed on Wednesday announced that he will hold a meeting with clerics from the Muslim community tomorrow. He said that there is no need to force anyone for the bandh.
