Congress MP Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written to President Ram Nath Kovind demanding imposition of President’s rule in the state following the violence in Birbhum district of West Bengal. Chowdhary urged the President to invoke Article 355 of the Indian Constitution in Birbhum, citing the deteriorating law and order situation in Bengal and 26 political killings in the last one month.
In a letter to President Ram Nath Kovind, Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has said, “There was a violent clash between two factions of the ruling party in Bogtui village of Birbhum district on Monday,” India Today reported. In this, the deputy head Bhadu Sheikh died. In retaliation, houses in the area were attacked and set ablaze. As a result of which 12 people including women and children have died. All the victims belong to the minority community.
Chaudhary further said in a letter to the President that the law and order situation in West Bengal has completely collapsed. It is very sad that only last month there were 26 political murders in West Bengal. Electoral violence and post-election violence have claimed many lives. The entire state is in the grip of fear and violence.
Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury has written in the letter ‘I raised this serious issue in Parliament yesterday, i.e. on 22nd March, to draw the attention of the country regarding the breakdown of constitutional machinery in the state. In view of the deteriorating law and order situation in West Bengal, I request you to invoke Article 355 of the Constitution to ensure that the Government of West Bengal continues to operate in accordance with the provisions of the Constitution.’
