The phase of changes is soon going to start in the Congress, which lost power by winning just 18 seats in the Punjab Assembly elections. Charanjit Singh Channi, who was CM, lost from both the seats, while Navjot Singh Sidhu, who was famous for his statements, himself had to face defeat from Amritsar East seat. After the results, Sonia Gandhi had demanded the resignation of state president Navjot Singh Sidhu. Sidhu had resigned by writing in one line that I am resigning as Sonia Gandhi wants. It is believed that the Congress would now like to end the chapter of the confrontation between Charanjit Singh Channi and Navjot Singh Sidhu, which had to bear the brunt of defeat.
Even though the assembly elections in the state will now be held after 5 years, but the Congress is worried about the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. To win 13 seats in the state, the screws are being tightened and the search for an alternative to Navjot Singh Sidhu is going on. At present, the names sent by the State Committee for the new state president of Punjab include MPs Ravneet Bittu and Chaudhary Santokh Singh. On the other hand, MLAs from Giddarbaha, Amarinder Raja Vading and Sukhjinder Randhawa are also in the race. However, Navjot Sidhu is seeking the post of head post for the second time. Even in the past, he had tried to show strength by meeting about 2 dozen Congress leaders. MLA Pratap Singh Bajwa, who returned to Punjab politics, has also staked claim in gestures.
Full focus of Congress, Punjab unit out of factionalism
The biggest tension for the Congress in Punjab is to stop factionalism. Charanjit Singh Channi, Sidhu and Bajwa together form three angles. Apart from this, Manish Tiwari also often lives in a different tone. In such a situation, the concern of the party is that such a leader should be given the command, under whose umbrella the whole party should work in unity. Congress is trying not to lose it in the Lok Sabha elections after two years, so Congress is focusing on MPs.
Sidhu is still engaged in doing politics of pressure
Navjot Sidhu’s credibility may have been weakened by losing his own seat, but his attitude remains intact. It is being said that he is once again demanding from the high command to become the state president. Sidhu had recently held a meeting with 24 leaders of Punjab. MLAs Sukhpal Khaira and Balwinder Dhaliwal also participated in it along with the candidates who lost the election. The Sidhu camp argues that while making Charanjit Channi the CM face, it was made clear to Rahul Gandhi that Sidhu would not be responsible for defeat or victory. So it would not be right to remove him from the post now.
