Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov arrived in India on Thursday on a two-day official visit amid the ongoing war against Ukraine. This is his first visit here since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine last month. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said Lavrov will meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar on Friday.
A media advisory issued by the Foreign Ministry on Lavrov’s visit made no mention of a meeting between the Russian foreign minister and the prime minister. However, sources said India is also likely to insist on ensuring timely supply of S-400 missile system parts and various military equipment by Russia.
The Russian Foreign Minister has arrived in India after completing a two-day visit to China. His visit to India comes during the visit of US Deputy National Security Adviser Dalip Singh and British Secretary of State Liz Truss. The US said on Thursday that countries proactively creating impasse in US sanctions against Russia will face consequences. At the same time, it also said that it would not like to see a “sharp” increase in India’s imports, including energy and other goods from Russia.
