Anatoly Chubais, a veteran Russian reformer, has stepped down as special representative of President Vladimir Putin to international organizations. He has left the country citing Putin’s opposition to the war. Chubais is the most top-profile official to step down since Russia launched an invasion of Ukraine. Before resigning, Anatoly was officially serving as the Russian climate envoy.
Anatoly gave Putin the first job in the Kremlin
According to a Bloomberg report, Anatoly, 66, is one of the Russian economic reformers of the 1990s who remained in Putin’s government and maintained close ties with Western officials. Known as the architect of Russia’s privatization of the 1990s, Anatoly gave Putin his first job in the Kremlin in the mid-1990s and welcomed his coming to power at the end of that decade.
Anatoly had been on many top government posts
Under Putin, Anatoly held top positions in top state-run companies until the president named him ambassador for sustainable development last year. The Russian government has increased pressure on domestic critics since the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Putin warned on March 16 that he would rid Russia of “scams and traitors”.
Arkady Dorkovic has also left the post regarding Ukraine issue
Last week, Arkady Dorkovich, who was Dmitry Medvedev’s senior economic adviser, stepped down as head of the state-backed Skolkovo Technology Fund after condemning the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Arkedi is one of the few former senior officials to speak out against the Ukraine war.
