The festival of Holi has arrived and this festival of brotherhood is celebrated with festivities across the country. The most special thing about Holi is that it is celebrated in different ways in different places. One such method is in Beed district of Maharashtra, where the son-in-law is carried on a donkey on the day of Holi. The interesting thing is that here Holi is celebrated in this way for more than eighty years. Let us know how and why Holi is celebrated in this way.
Actually, this tradition of celebrating Holi is in a village in Beed district of Maharashtra. Here people call their new son-in-law on the day of Holi. For the last few years, before Holi, such a son-in-law, who is newly married, is found here. This tradition is performed on Holi with the youngest son-in-law and on the day of Holi, the son-in-law is put on a donkey and painted, along with gifts are also given to him.
How did this tradition start?
It is said that about eighty years ago, a son-in-law of a Deshmukh family in Vida Yevata village in Kej tehsil of Beed district refused to paint Holi. Then his father-in-law tried to persuade him to paint. He ordered a donkey decorated with flowers, made the son-in-law sit on it and then it was taken around the whole village and from then on it started.
It is also mentioned in many media reports that the tradition was started by a resident named Anandrao Deshmukh and he had earlier celebrated such Holi with his son-in-law. Not only this, many times the people here jokingly gift a donkey to the son-in-law and he is given a ride, along with clothes of his choice.
It has happened many times that Holi here is dominated on social media. Once, in the wake of this Holi, some sons-in-law of the village started trying to escape by hiding to escape. But the people of the village kept full guard on him and played Holi with him. However, it is said that due to Corona last year, this tradition could not be performed.
