Afghanistan-Russia friendship! Taliban government recognized, the first country to do so

Russia formally recognized the Taliban government of Afghanistan on 3 July 2025, which became the first country to recognize it. The Russian Foreign Ministry admitted the identity cards of the Taliban’s new Ambassador Gul Hasan Hasan. The Taliban’s white flag was hoisted at the Afghan Embassy in Moscow. This news came out in the report of Al Jazeera.

Russia removed the Taliban from its terrorist list in April 2025. The Russian Foreign Ministry said, “This recognition will increase cooperation in trade, energy, and infrastructure between the two countries.” Russia exports oil, gas and wheat to Afghanistan. Afghan Foreign Minister Amir Khan Muttki called it a “courageous step” and hoped that other countries would follow it.

Russian President Vladimir Putin described the Taliban as an ally against terrorism. Russia’s special messenger Jamir Kabulov said, “This step is towards a complete partnership with Afghanistan.” The Taliban captured Kabul after the return of the US Army in August 2021. Since then no country was recognizing his government.

The move was also criticized. Former Afghanistan MP Maryam Solamankhil said, “It ignores human rights and international law.” The Taliban has been condemned globally to ban the education and freedom of women and girls. Former Afghan politician Naseer Ahmed Andisha described it as “harmful to both sides”.

This move by Russia strengthens its strategic position in Central and South Asia. The Taliban participated in economic forums with Russia, such as Kazan Forum and St. Petersburg Economic Forum. This step can present a diplomatic challenge for countries like India, which takes a cautious stand against the Taliban in Afghanistan.
