Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif
Islamabad: The round of talks between the Government of Pakistan and former Prime Minister Imran Khan may once again begin. Pakistan Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif proposed the formation of a parliamentary committee on Thursday to carry forward the talks with former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party. Sharif offered this after the talks with the opposition party failed.
Negotiations ended after three meetings
The two sides started dialogue on 23 December last year, but the conversation stopped only after three meetings. The talks ended when PTI stepped back on the issue of delay in formation of judicial commissions on incidents dated 9 May, 2023 and 26 November last year. After the negotiations failed, PTI announced to resume the movement and said that February 8 will be celebrated as ‘Black Day’ in protest against the alleged rigging in last year elections.
PM Shahbaz Sharif suggested the path
Meanwhile, at the Federal Cabinet meeting, PM Shahbaz Sharif suggested the way forward that a committee with members of Parliament should be formed to investigate the incidents at the place of the judicial committee, which includes members of both parties. He said that the committee should be formed on the same lines as it was in 2018 when PTI came to power. The opposition led by Shahbaz Sharif then demanded an election investigation.
Imran Khan is in jail
Imran Khan has been in jail since August 2023, but his party leaders regularly meet him and discuss legal matters against him and the current political situation. Recently, Rana Sanaullah, a part of Prime Minister Sharif’s associate and talk team, criticized PTI of stubborn attitude. (Language)
