Bangladesh’s legal affairs advisor Asif Nazrul has said that the interim government of the country is ‘adigal’ on its commitment to hold general elections in February next year. This information has been given in the media reports on Wednesday.
The government institution Bangladesh Sangabad Sanstha (BSS) quoted Nazrul as saying, “The government is moving forward doing all the preparations for the election.”
After a meeting in the cabinet department on Tuesday, he said, “Elections will be held in February and the government’s stand on it is firm.”
This comment of the legal advisor has come amid increasing speculation about elections. Earlier, the leaders of the National Citizen Party rejected the possibility of election in February next year without completing the significant reforms and the cases launched by the Interim government.
Commenting on the issue, Nazrul said that the statements of political parties about election time are part of the political process.
He said, “You have always been looking at this. Such political statements have been given traditionally in Bangladesh, and the same is happening now. There has not been any major qualitative change in this discussion. Therefore, whatever is said about election time, it should be seen as part of the political process.”
Nazrul said that although the responsibility of holding elections is eventually with the government, not any political party. He said, “On behalf of the government, we are clearly saying that elections will be completed in February.”
