Israel-Hamas Ceasefire: The war between Israel and Hamas may stop. Two officials have said that Hamas has accepted the draft agreement regarding the Gaza ceasefire and hostages. Israel is still considering the agreement. Officials had also given information about the ceasefire on Monday. The three officials acknowledged progress in ceasefire talks, saying the coming days would be crucial to ending the 15-month war that has destabilized the Middle East.
Efforts of America, Egypt and Qatar
The US, Egypt and Qatar have tried to mediate last year to end the 15-month war and secure the release of dozens of people taken hostage in Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attack. There are still about 100 Israeli hostages inside Gaza and the military believes at least a third of them have died.
Draft agreement was presented
A person familiar with the talks said an overnight breakthrough had been achieved and a proposed draft of the agreement had been presented. The person said that Israeli and Hamas negotiators will now send it to their respective leaders for final approval. The person concerned also said that mediators from the Gulf country Qatar have put renewed pressure on Hamas to accept the agreement, while newly elected President Donald Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff is putting pressure on the Israelis. Witkoff recently joined the talks and has been in the area in recent days.
it may still take time
Regarding the ceasefire, an Egyptian official had said that good progress has been made, but it is likely to take a few more days. This official also said that both sides aim to reach an agreement before Donald Trump takes oath as President on January 20.
