There is a debate going on in different parts of the world regarding giving death penalty to criminals. On one hand, America’s newly elected President Donald Trump has talked about strongly promoting the death penalty. So, now a country has emerged which has abolished the provision of death penalty in its country. That means now no person will get death penalty in this country. Let us tell you that the name of this country which has abolished death penalty is Zimbabwe.

The law got approval from the President

In the African country Zimbabwe, the provision of death penalty has been completely abolished. Zimbabwe’s President Emmerson Mnangagwa this week approved a provision of a law abolishing the death penalty. The last time a prisoner was given the death penalty in Zimbabwe was almost two decades ago. For this reason, it was being speculated that Zimbabwe might take steps to abolish the death penalty.

Once President Emerson was also sentenced to death

Let us tell you one special thing that the current President of Zimbabwe, Emmerson Mnangagwa was also once sentenced to death. He was given this punishment in the 1960s during Zimbabwe’s independence struggle. Emmerson Mnangagwa was born in the year 1942. He participated in the movement against colonialism due to which he had to spend ten years in jail. He currently serves as the President of Zimbabwe since 2017.

How many such prisoners are there in Zimbabwe?

Mnangagwa was also sentenced to death in the 1960s during the independence struggle. There are about 60 prisoners in Zimbabwe who have been sentenced to death. However, now after the introduction of this new law, everyone’s punishment will be forgiven. Let us tell you that the last time someone was given death sentence in Zimbabwe was in the year 2005.
