Islamabad: Top leaders of Pakistan’s jailed former Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party were arrested by police on Monday from outside the Parliament House after the National Assembly session, according to media reports. The Dawn newspaper quoted police spokesperson Javed Taqi as saying that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leaders Barrister Gauhar Ali Khan, Sher Afzal Khan Marwat and Advocate Shoaib Shaheen have been arrested by the Islamabad police.
‘Direct attack on democracy’
Regarding the arrest of Sher Afzal Khan Marwat, the PTI party said in a post on ‘X’, “The PML-N government should be completely ashamed of such a move against a sitting member of the National Assembly. This is a direct attack on democracy.” The party accused the Islamabad police of following “illegal orders” and called on the Islamabad Police Inspector General (IG) to “stop this action.”
‘The government is scared’
“The government has once again proved how scared it is of Imran Khan and his minions,” Marwat said in a statement posted on X. Opposition leader Umar Ayub Khan condemned the arrests and alleged that the Islamabad police had formed teams to arrest him, PTI leader Zartaj Gul Wazir and “other colleagues”.
Allegations of clash with police personnel
Sources told Geo News that Marwat was arrested for violating rules under a new law – Peaceful Assembly and Public Order Bill, 2024. He said the PTI MP was accused of clashing with police personnel a day earlier. In another post, the PTI party condemned the arrest of party president Barrister Gauhar, calling it “illegal”.
Many more leaders may be arrested
Cricketer-turned-politician Imran Khan, 71, is facing several legal cases and has been in jail for nearly a year after being sentenced in a corruption case. Sources said that along with Umar and Zartaj, other PTI leaders including Hammad Azhar, Kanwal Shauzab, Naeem Haider Panjutha, Amir Mughal and Khalid Khurshid are also likely to be arrested.
