Islamabad: Pakistan’s major opposition party Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) boycotted the important security meeting convened on Tuesday to discuss the current security situation in the country. National Assembly President Ayaz Sadiq chaired a meeting of the Parliamentary Committee on a closed room on national security after the hijack of a train on 11 March by rebels of the banned Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA). Former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan’s party PTI boycotted the meeting. Khan is currently in jail. The BLA had hijacked the train in Balochistan’s Balan area, with about 425 passengers.
PTI refused to attend the meeting
The meeting convened on the advice of Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif was attended by Chief Ministers, leaders of various political parties, provincial Chief Ministers, Governor and Army Chief General Asim Munir. The military leadership informed the Parliamentary Committee about the current security situation. The details of the discussion held in the meeting are not available immediately. However, Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) refused to attend the meeting despite the government’s invitation as the party had demanded a meeting with 72-year-old Khan before the meeting. The government did not accept the demand.
‘Joint session of Parliament is needed’
PTI-led opposition coalition Tehreek Tehfuz-e-Ai-Ain Pakistan (TTAP) also distanced a distance from the meeting. TTAP chief Mahmood Khan Achkzai said in a press conference that Khan should be invited to the meeting. He said, “The PTI founder should also be invited as any meeting without them will not have any importance.” Achchajai, ethnic Pashtunkhwa Milli Awami party (PKMAP) is also prominent. He said that representatives of every political party should be invited to any meeting on national security. He said, “Pakistan needs a joint session of Parliament for the difficult situations of Pakistan. Everyone should get a chance to speak in the joint session. ”
Pakistani army is being attacked
In addition to the attack on the convoy of security forces in Jafar Express train Hijack and Nushki, rebels in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (KP) province last week targeted police and other security organizations in several attacks. The security situation is unstable in the two provinces of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan, where Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) and BLA have carried out several attacks. (Language)
