The devastating landslide in Darfur, the western region of Sudan, destroyed a village, killing at least 1,000 people. It is one of the most deadly natural disasters in the history of the last few years of the African country. A rebel group controlling the region gave this information late on Monday night.
The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army said in a statement that the tragedy took place on Sunday in Tarasin village located in the Marrah mountains of Madhya Darfur after several days of heavy rains in late August.
The statement said, “Preliminary information shows that all the residents of the village have died, whose number is estimated to be more than one thousand.” Only one person is left.
The group stated that the village “has become completely frozen”, and an appeal has been made to the United Nations and International Support Groups to help with the bodies.
The footage shared by the ‘Marrah Mountains’ news institution features a flat region among the mountain ranges, where a group of people is searching.
The tragedy occurred at a time when a disastrous civil war broke out in Sudan in which the tension between the country’s army and the paramilitary rapid support forces (RSF) turned into an open fight in the capital Khartum and other parts of the country in April 2023.
Due to serious sanctions and fights between Sudan’s army and RSF, most of the Darfur region, including the Marrah mountain, has almost become almost inaccessible to the United Nations and the support groups.
The Sudan Liberation Movement-Army, Darfur and Kordofan are one of the several rebellious groups, centered in the Marrah mountain region. It has not taken any side in the war.
Marrah Parvat is a rugged volcanic chain that has become the center of the fight between the Army and the RSF to 160 km south-west of the al-Fashar.
More than 40,000 people have been killed in this conflict, more than 1.4 crore people have been forced to leave their homes and some people have been forced to eat grass to stay alive due to famine in many parts of the country.
