Washington: Donald Trump has taken a big decision before the US presidential election on November 5. The former US President said in a petition filed in a court on Tuesday that he would plead not guilty to criminal charges in a revised indictment, which accuses him of attempting to overturn his 2020 election defeat. In view of the presidential election, Trump has given up his right to appear in court and has now authorized his lawyers to file a petition. The decision on Trump’s petition in the revised US indictment before the presidential election will be very big.
However, Trump is yet to make a request in the amended indictment. The amended indictment, received by Trump’s special counsel Jack Smith last week, includes the same four charges that prosecutors brought against Trump last year. He was accused of attempting to defraud the United States, obstructing the congressional certification of the election, and depriving voters of the right to a fair vote.
Relief was received from US Supreme Court
The new indictment was revised and redefined some of the charges after the US Supreme Court cited broad immunity from criminal prosecution for official actions taken by him as president. Trump was due in federal court in Washington in August 2023 to plead not guilty to the charges in the initial indictment. Prosecutors and Trump’s lawyers are due in court on Thursday to determine the next step following the Supreme Court’s immunity ruling. (Reuters)
