BRICS Summit in Russia: Russian President Vladimir Putin will host many leaders from around the world including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chinese President Xi Jinping, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan and Iranian President Masoud Pejeshkian in the coming days. All these leaders will be in the Russian city of Kazan on Tuesday for the summit of the ‘BRICS’ group. Along with this, the possibility of the Russian President being isolated due to the ongoing war in Ukraine and the international arrest warrant against Putin will also be ruled out.

Many countries want to be part of the group

The purpose of ‘BRICS’, a group of developing countries, is to balance the Western-led global system. It initially included Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa but expanded rapidly this year. Iran, Egypt, Ethiopia, the United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia joined in January. Turkey, Azerbaijan and Malaysia have formally applied to join. Not only this, many other countries have also expressed their desire to become its members.

What will Russia try to show?

Putin’s foreign policy adviser Yuri Ushakov said 32 countries have confirmed participation and more than 20 will send their heads of government. Ushakov said Putin would hold about 20 bilateral meetings and that the summit could become “the largest foreign policy event ever” on Russian soil. Analysts say that amid the ongoing tension with the West, through this conference Russia will try to show that it is standing shoulder to shoulder with its global allies. Along with this, he would also like to make agreements with Russia to strengthen its economy and boost its war efforts. This will be an opportunity for other countries participating in the conference to present their views.

The conference is personally important for Putin

“The beauty of BRICS is that it doesn’t put too many obligations on you,” said Alexander Gabuyev, director of the Carnegie Russia Eurasia Center. Gabuyev said the summit is personally important for Putin because it Reflects the failure of Western efforts to isolate them. He said the summit would demonstrate at home and abroad that “Russia is indeed a key player leading a new constellation that will counter Western hegemony.”

Russia will bypass western sanctions

Gabuyev said Russia will talk about increasing trade with important countries like India and China and bypassing Western sanctions. He said that India is an important market for Russian goods. Russia also wants more countries to join the payment system project that would be an alternative to the global bank messaging network ‘Swift’ so that Moscow can do business with its partners without worrying about sanctions.

India and Russia have deep relations

India’s Western friends want India to play a more active role in convincing Moscow to end the war while Modi has avoided condemning Russia, insisting on a peaceful resolution. India considers Russia a time-tested Cold War partner, which has cooperated with India in the areas of defence, oil, nuclear energy and space despite close ties with India’s main rival China. This will be the second meeting between Modi and Putin in a few months. Modi visited Russia in July, went to Ukraine in August to meet its President Volodymyr Zelensky and in September went to America to meet US President Joe Biden. (AP)
