Abhinav Bindra is counted among the best players of India. He is the only Indian to win an Olympic gold medal in shooting for India. The International Olympic Committee (IOC) has decided to award the ‘Olympic Order’ to Indian shooter Abhinav Bindra for his outstanding services to the Olympic movement. India’s Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya announced this on social media.

Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya congratulated Abhinav Bindra on being awarded the ‘Olympic Order’. He wrote on ‘X’ that ‘Congratulations to Abhinav Bindra on being awarded the Olympic Order for outstanding contribution to the Olympic movement. His achievement makes us proud and he truly deserves it. He has inspired generations of shooters and Olympians.

IOC chief wrote a letter to Bindra

The award ceremony will be held during the 142nd IOC Session in Paris on August 10, a day before the closing of the Olympics. The IOC President wrote in a letter addressed to Abhinav Bindra on July 20, “I am very pleased to inform you that the IOC Executive Board has decided to confer the ‘Olympic Order’ on you for your outstanding services to the Olympic Movement.”

IOC’s biggest award

The ‘Olympic Order’ is the highest award of the International Olympic Committee, given for distinguished contributions to the Olympic movement. Nominations for this are proposed by the Olympic Order Committee and decided by the Executive Board. This award was started in 1975.

Won gold medal in Beijing Olympics

Abhinav Bindra, now 41 years old, won the gold medal in 10 meter air rifle at the 2008 Beijing Olympics. He is the first Indian player to win an individual gold medal at the Olympic Games. He was a member of the Athletes Committee of the International Shooting Sport Federation from 2010 to 2020, in which he was its president since 2014. He has been a member of the IOC Athletes Commission since 2018.
