NPS vs OPS: Government employees across the country have been continuously demanding the restoration of the old pension system (OPS). When elections were going on in five states including Uttar Pradesh, the Congress-ruled Ashok Gehlot-led Rajasthan government had announced the restoration of old pension. A few days later, the Chhattisgarh government led by Bhupesh Baghel also announced the restoration of old pension. Since then, there is a constant pressure being exerted on the Central Government that the Central Government should restore the old pension system. Chhattisgarh’s Bastar Congress MP Deepak Baij had questioned the Finance Ministry regarding the restoration of old pension. The written reply of which has been given by the Minister of State for Finance, Dr. Bhagwat Karad. The MP had asked whether the central government is also considering removing the NPS (New Pension Scheme)? In response to the question, Dr Bhagwat Karad on behalf of the government said that the government is not considering any such proposal. What is the complaint of government employees regarding NPS?
First let us understand what is OPS (Old Pension Scheme). The old pension scheme guarantees regular pension. Whereas NPS is a market based system.
