Bank Nifty also closed at the level of 51,060.51 with a strong rise of 200.4 points.
The domestic stock market welcomed the beginning of the new year on Wednesday and closed with a rise. Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE) benchmark Sensex closed at 78,507.41 with a sharp jump of 368.4 points. Similarly, the National Stock Exchange (NSE) index Nifty 50 also closed at the level of 23742.90 at the end of trading with a gain of 98.1 points. The Indian stock market gained nearly half a percent on the first day of the New Year 2025 led by select heavyweights like HDFC Bank, Larsen & Toubro (L&T) and Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M).
Top Gainer and Loser Stocks
In today’s trading, 24 out of 30 Sensex stocks closed in the green. Davanagere Sugar Company Limited, Fos India Limited, Century Plyboards (India) Limited, Techno Electric & Engineering Company Limited and Strides Pharma Science Limited were among the top Nifchi gainers at the close of trade. Whereas, shares of TVS Holdings Limited, Crompton Greaves Consumer Electricals Limited, DSJ Keep Learning Limited, Timescan Logistics (India) Limited and Can Fin Homes Limited emerged as top losers.
Of the 4,064 shares listed on BSE, 2,741 advanced, 1,226 declined and 97 were unchanged. Also, 374 shares touched their upper circuit, while 205 shares touched their lower circuit. BSE Midcap index rose 0.5% and BSE Smallcap index rose 1% in today’s trade. BSE SME IPO index also registered a strong gain of 1.7%.
Sensex jumps 8.16% in 2024
According to exchange data, foreign institutional investors (FIIs) sold shares worth ₹4,645.22 crore on Tuesday. Global oil benchmark Brent crude rose 0.88% to $74.64 a barrel. Let us tell you here, in the entire 2024, Sensex rose by 5,898.75 points or 8.16% and Nifty rose by 1,913.4 points or 8.80%. Maruti Suzuki India Ltd on Wednesday said total wholesale sales increased by 30 per cent to 1,78,248 units in December 2024, compared to 1,37,551 units in the same month a year ago.
Among Sensex stocks, Maruti, Mahindra & Mahindra, Larsen & Toubro, Bajaj Finance, Tata Motors, IndusInd Bank, Asian Paints, Power Grid, HDFC Bank and Axis Bank were among the gainers on Wednesday. Tata Steel, Adani Ports, Zomato, HCL Tech, State Bank of India, Hindustan Unilever and Tech Mahindra declined.
