Well-known companies of the country- Hindalco Industries, Raviraj Foil and Jindal India had filed complaints against aluminum foils being imported from China. Now the commerce ministry has recommended continuation of anti-dumping duty on aluminum foil imports from China for five years. The ministry has taken this step to protect domestic companies from the brunt of cheap imports. Let us tell you that aluminum foil is used in the pharmaceutical sector including food items.
Recommendation for 5 years: The Directorate General of Trade Remedies (DGTR), the probe arm of the ministry, said in a notification that the dumping of aluminum foil from China continues unabated and in the event of revocation of this duty, cheaper imported products may enter the Indian market. DGTR said, “In view of this situation, the Directorate General has recommended continuation of duty on aluminum foil so as to avoid any injury to the domestic industry.”

The DGTR has recommended imposition of anti-dumping duty of $469-1,106 per tonne on aluminum foil. The final decision on imposition of duty is taken by the Finance Ministry. The Finance Ministry had earlier imposed anti-dumping duty on aluminum foil in May 2017.
Hindalco Industries, Raviraj Foil, Jindal India had applied for initiation of investigation of ‘aluminum foil 5.5 micron to 80 micron’ imported from China.
