Beijing: China’s ruling Communist Party has announced an investigation into corruption charges against another chief of the Strategic Missile Force, the media reported on Friday. The media reported that earlier also top officials of this force had come under the scanner of corruption charges and investigations. Earlier, former Defense Minister General Li Shangfu and his successor General Li Yuchao, who took over as the commander of the force in 2022, were sacked due to corruption charges and an investigation was launched against them.
When was the Strategic Missile Force established
The Strategic Missile Force of the People’s Liberation Army (PLA) was established 9 years ago. This force has the command of nuclear weapons and missiles. Li Shangfu was the head of the Rocket (Missile) Force before becoming the Defense Minister and he is being tried for corruption. Li Yuchao was a member of the Strategic Force and he was also dismissed along with Shangfu.
The missile force oversees the nuclear arsenal
The Communist Party’s plenary meeting on Thursday confirmed the Politburo’s earlier decision to sack General Li Shangfu and General Li Yuchao. Along with this, the meeting also announced an investigation into corruption charges against General Sun Jinming, who till recently headed the Rocket Force. Hong Kong-based South China Morning Post reported on Friday that Sun is the head of the PLA’s Rocket Force, which oversees the country’s nuclear arsenal. (Language)
