To solve the problem of accommodation of students in Delhi University, the university administration has announced the construction of two new hostels. This will be the highest capacity hostel of DU till date. Both the hostels will have a total capacity to accommodate about two thousand students.
Equipped with modern facilities, this hostel will be of ten storeys. One hostel will be only for girl students, which will have the capacity to house eight hundred to 1000 girl students, while the other hostel will have a capacity of about one thousand, which will have both boys and girls. Both these hostels will be built in Dhaka near the university. Rajiv Gandhi Mahila Hostel has already been built here by DU. A senior DU official said that while one hostel will be made by CPWD, the other hostel will be constructed by NBCC.
meeting will be held this week
In the meeting of the Finance Committee of DU, the construction work related to DU will also be discussed. In this it will be decided how much will be the cost of construction of these two hostels and how will it be constructed. DU is engaged in completing many formalities for this.
Hostels are not according to the number of students
The way the number of seats has increased in DU in the last 10 years, the hostels have not been built accordingly. After OBC expansion, seats for EWS category have been increased but the problem of students staying here has not been resolved. More than 50 per cent students in DU are from outside Delhi and adjoining areas. There is not enough hostel facility for them. DU does not have enough hostels to accommodate the students at the undergraduate level. Most of the hostels are for research or post graduate level students. In such a situation, student organizations repeatedly protest against the demand for hostels. Students who do not get hostel in DU, they live near DU in Mukherjee Nagar, GTB Nagar, Gandhi Vihar, Nehru Vihar and other nearby areas.
