A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking to accommodate the medical students who returned to India after saving their lives from Ukraine in the midst of the Russia-Ukraine War. The petition in the Supreme Court has sought a direction to the central government and other stakeholders to accommodate medical students returning from Ukraine under suitable Indian or foreign degree programs in Indian medical colleges.
The PIL states that the central government and state governments should coordinate with the authorities in Ukraine. And alternatively arrangements should be made for these students to continue studying by declaring some seats in central, state or private medical colleges as foreign campuses of Ukrainian institutions. It said that this can be done as an emergency measure till the situation in the war-torn country returns to normal.
The petition has been filed by two advocates. It highlights the crisis looming large over the future of Indian students. Students who returned from Ukraine have been forced to leave their medical courses midway due to the war situation. It has been said in the petition that there is no clarity as to when normalcy will be restored in Ukraine and whether the students will be able to complete their courses or not.
On March 4, the Supreme Court heard a petition seeking the evacuation of some Indian medical students stranded near the Ukraine-Romania border. During the hearing, the Center argued that it has so far evacuated 17,000 Indian students from the conflict zone. During that time, the court had directed the Center to set up an online helpline for students and families stranded in Ukraine.
