Summary
The Mumbai High Court, in a hearing held on Tuesday, directed the city police not to take any action like arrest for three weeks against filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar and two producers.
There has been news of relief for filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar, who is in legal trouble after the release of his Marathi film. The Mumbai High Court, in a hearing on Tuesday, directed the city police not to take any action like arrest for three weeks against filmmaker Mahesh Manjrekar and two producers for filming obscene scenes on minors in a Marathi film.
The city police had earlier this week registered an FIR against Manjrekar and others under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses (POCSO) Act. Meanwhile, Manjrekar, who directed the film, and producers Narendra Hirawat and Shreyansh Hirawat have moved the High Court seeking quashing of the case. He also sought interim protection from arrest.
Advocates of the petitioners in the case Shirish Gupte and Abad Ponda told the court that Manjrekar and Hirawat were ready to cooperate in the investigation and would also appear before the police for questioning if required. A division bench of Justice PB Varale and Justice SP Tawde, after a brief hearing of the matter, observed that the petitioners had made a case for grant of interim relief.
In the matter, the Court observed that the judges held that the film has already been released after obtaining the certificate from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) and the alleged objectionable scenes were not even a part of the film. The scene was part of the trailer, which has been removed. While adjourning the hearing, the High Court said, “We direct the police not to take any coercive action or steps against the petitioners for three weeks.”
